RealScout.net "Top Unsigned Players in New York City- Part 2"

In this Four-Part series, I would like to put my honest opinions out there and discuss some of our top available players of 2009.

All these players aren't Division One superstars, but should be playing college basketball for free, in 2009.

RealScout.net NYC Uncommitted Seniors
List Part 2

Lance Stephenson 6'5 Lincoln (Brooklyn)

Stephenson is one of 2009's highest rated recruits. Leading his Lincoln team to Three Public School titles. Stephenson hopes to win a fourth this season. Leading Lincoln to a 13-1 League record, Lance is averaging 31.9ppg & 12.7rpg.

Choosing between St. John's, Maryland, Kansas and others. Stephenson will be representing NYC in the 2009 McDonald's All-American game, which will be played this year in Miami. Stephenson is expected to commit after the PSAL Championship Game.

Ronald Baker 6'2 Wings Academy (Bronx)
17.8ppg 5.5rpg 2.4apg

Baker is a guard who can do a lot with the ball in his hand. There aren't too many city players that can play against Baker. He's had some real big games in the last couple of years for wings and is one of the Bronx's best prospects.

I know that a couple of DI & DII schools are interested in his services for next season. A good boro-playoff run, and psal run will further increase his worth.

Isiah Stokley 6'3 Edison (Queens)

In my opinion a Player of the Year, is a player who the other team couldn't win without. A player who was above all the others almost every single day.

A player who doesn't accept defeat and will only come back stronger the next game. Not a guy who isn't about self before team, a guy who came from the bottom to the top. Isiah Stokley is easily the Queens Player of the Year.

Averaging 25.4ppg, 10.9rpg, and 3.8 apg. Stokley can do it all! A easy Division One prospect, its hard to believe, Isiah did have some Bad games this season. If Stokley chooses the right route after High School, he could be the next Jessie Saap (Georgetown).

Halil Kanacevic 6'8 Curtis HS
19ppg, 11.7rpg, 2.6apg

The PSAL Best Big man isn't James Padgett. Halil Kanacevic claims that title, and I haven't seen him play since IS8 (where he dominated padgett).

Not afraid of anybody, the 6'8 versatile forward slash center, slash point forward, can do it all.

Knock down a jumpers, handles the pill like a doctor or goes upstairs backwards like a furniture mover. Easily one of the biggest steals in the state by any coach who's needs a big.

Trevor Dillard 6'1 Thurgood Marshall (Manhattan)
13ppg 3rpg 4apg

Dillard didn't put up huge numbers this year. But, that doesn't hinder his worth in my eyes. The only NYC PSAL player to attend Reebok All-American Camp 2008. Dillard is a big guard, who can be very effective at the next level in the right situation.

Darwin Ellis 5'8 Lincoln (Brooklyn)

The best clutch performers in the PSAL. Like Lance, Ellis has Three-PSAL rings on his fingers and will be going for a fourth. Ellis has been playing this season with a broken finger and that explains his 8ppg avg..but Ellis is averaging 6.6 assists per game, which is one of the highest in the psal. Ellis was expected to pick a school in October.

But will be choosing a school after the psal playoffs, most likely St. Francis NY (D1)

Trevon Hamlet 6'6 Loughlin (Brooklyn)

One of my all-time favorite players. I coached Hamlet on the Loughlin Freshman team where he held us down at 26ppg against Sean Johnson, Omari Lawrence, Jin Hong, Tyreak Johnson, Rasheem King, and James Padgett night in and night out.

Hamlet can play division one basketball, there is no doubt in my mind. Hamlet isn't a high riser, but uses his iq and agility to get around any defender. Very similar to Chris Gadson (Fordham Committ), expect to hear Hamlet choosing a solid d1 school at the end of another terrific high school season.

Deran Banton & Jovan Bovell Jamaica HS (Queens)

I knew of Banton for a while. His nickname is "Baby Kemba" as he plays the same uptempo push the ball offense and is a very athletic player. But Jovan Jovan Bovell was a big surprise when I attended the FK Lane vs Jamaica High School game last week. In a high scoring game, 6'1 combo guard Banton finished with 21pts, but Bovell a 5'10 pg shot the ball very well scoring 33pts and having the game of his life.

Eventhough, Jamaica lost, you can see that Banton (18ppg, 7rpg, 4apg) and Bovell (17ppg, 3rpg, 3apg) need to be looks from juco's, D3's, and D2's.
