In the current climate of high school basketball. I've come to realize that, what realscout brings to the table far exceeds what others do. So, to that Id like to thank you again for taking the time to read about another interesting player.

While i can say in the last 15 years, i've been apart of sending alot of players (stopped counting at 92) to division one colleges. I've always had a prospect that's road to success travels towards the division 2/3 or junior college ranks.

It doesnt mean this player is less of a player. But, may in fact be a late bloomer or a player who just isnt at the level as some of the other prospects around the nation at that time.

Seeing me around at all in the last 6 years. I always have some players which I call my heart. Sonny kadisha my heart, a gritty and grimey 6'5 SF who works just as hard as your nations #1 prospect.

Kadisha has always been a very valuable member of my daily circle of friends/players that keeps me sane. He started out his high school career at bishop loughlin, starting his first two years on the freshman and jv level with Branden Fraser (Fordham U), he then transfered to Forest Hills Hs and was a key player in winning its first ever borough championship. While he finished at forest hills and worked on his game for a year.

Im happy to say, that Kadisha's road to success will pass thru Hostos Community College in the Bronx.

Kadisha, growth in the last two months leads me to believe that he can succeed in this game, just like a drum and my heart.. He will continue to beat down the barriers.

Ricky Rivers Fireball 2011 Tournament at Baruch College in Lower Manhattan and Mousey's Tri-State Classic at 145th and Lenox Ave were two must attend events this past saturday for me.

Fireball 2011, featured all the top players of today and yesterday. Justin Brownlee (SJU), Paris Horne (SJU), Sean Evans (SJU), Kimmani Barrett (Lasalle), Sean Singletary (UVA), Eric Devendorf (Syracuse), John Lucas III (Chicago Bulls), Sean Kennedy (Holy Cross D-1), Mike Taylor (Boys & Girls HS), Dakari Johnson 2014 (St. Patrick NJ), Robert "Stix" Mitchell (Seton Hall), Adris "2 hard 2 guard" Deleon (Eastern Washington) and too many more.

It was a great atmosphere, the air condition was blowing. I since switching my cell phone provider to Verizon, had full service 3 stories below street level. Ricky was cool on the Mic, and the DJ was spinning beats while some were shooting freethrows but, this is NYC and I wouldnt have it any other way.

After going to get something to eat in downtown manhattan. Mike Poole (Always with family) and I went uptown to try and catch the end of the Rucker Tournament, which is played on 145th and Lenox and I think sunday's at Milbank on like 117th and Lenox. But, our 120plus block drive took a little longer than expected. So, I watched some tri-state high school action.

The Tri-state highschool game that I attended had some good players Jeff Short (Fordham), Trivante Bloodman (Wadeligh), Dennis Green (Winchendon), Isaiah Cousins (Mt. Vernon), and others who I see all the time but really dont know their names. The game was action packed, alot of clearouts and go to the hoop, alot of ooo's and ahh's... basically what you expect to see at a streetball tournament.

It was nice to see a rapper by the name of the "Pre$ident" who's better known to me as Norman Simmons giving back to the community by giving 5 free bikes to the kids from the audience who made a free throw. We spoke after the game (at tri-state) and I wished him much success in his rap career. He played division one at Liberty (D1) and was a real good player, now he's in the music game.

Sunday was a little bit of a different flow. My espn 30 for 30 pack just came on saturday afternoon. So i spent most of the sunday catching up on some of our top stories of the past 30 years.

But, here's something you didnt know. I had a chance to see some open gym basketball at Rutgers University.

I dont like talking too much about open gym, its a quiet well organized run at many schools throughout the nation. A chance for players of different colleges getting a chance to just play bball. Rutgers had plenty of action last night. I seen alot of good plays yesterday but none better than Wally Judge threw down a crazy dunk on my young Boy Rudy Collins. Myles Mack played 7 or 8 games and didnt sweat at all. Mike Poole played well, Seagers is going to be real good by soph year. He's gotten better than before, i just think Mack is transitioning well to D1 Ball.

Hamady Ndiaye hitting the dougie after a winning basket was funny.. Learned that from John Wall his Wizzards Teammate. Maurice Harkless and Dane Miller going at it was fun to watch. Harkless, Judge, Mack, and Greg Lewis, looked well together. Dane Miller caught a full court alley oop that was sick. I like the Big East open runs, but im not biasd.. up next, probably will be Hofstra, Fordham, St. Peters NJ, SJU, and Uconn.

Today I'll be watching Bedford Y at west 4th at 4:30

He has a nice jumpshot and how in the world are they expecting to stop this "Nate Robinson" like guard in the Big 12. His impact at Iowa State might be the biggest just because, they landed a huge talent in a 5'10 guard."

"Lewis was a consistent Killer, who for some reason unknown to man. Just wasn't getting his fair share of respect. I think it had more to do with him not really traveling out of the city as much as others. But, i can tell you one thing, Lewis can end up being the best player out of St. Marys in the end. Gray has been around for a while. The main scorer on the playaz club and a capable defender. He along with Edwards are two real good pickups for George Mason. Reminds me a little of Former St. Benedicts and current NBA Draftee John Holland.

I started out this morning writing this very long story about the 12th man. The 12th man can be the last person to get into the game for many reasons. It could be because of age, skill level, academic or other problems that arent seen. The 12th man can also be a like-able player who just wants to be associated with being one of the guys.

All I know is that, that damn story I worked on was about 3 pages long. So long story short, coaches please develop your 12th man. He's just as important as the best player on your team. Especially when we always stress there is no "I" in team statement.

Other Notes

* I had a chance to go to Beacon 158 yesterday, I seen all the games, but Im not horrible at notes. Just horrible at taking notes on games that don't peek my interest for various reasons...maybe I'm just focusing on one players reactions or just talking about all the other things going on around me..some involving the game. Anyway, Rudy Collins & Nick Padgett played great for Forest Hills in their win over SFP, Van beat a young SJB team, and Javon Thomas and Lebrent Walker led Team Basic over Cardozo (Split Squad)..oh yeah JT caught a mean game winning slam.

Jordan Allen Picks Hofstra

Real Scout Overview

Allen is a lefty who gets things done. Playing his last three seasons at Bayshore High School in Long Island. Nobody really knew what to think of him. But, after this summer playing well in Hoop Group Session I and Las Vegas & Arizona with the NY panthers.

The 6'5 do everything forward picked Hofstra over Wagner and others, also deciding to spend his final year of High School at LI Lutheran. Allen's confidence will take him far in the Colonial League, This was a good get for the New staff of the pride

Jack will spend his 5th year of High School improving every aspect of his game. Having a breakout 2009-10 season for Rice Hs. Jack has committed to Rutgers University and looks to bring toughness around the basket on every possession.

While i've known Jack for a few years. It has taken him a while to really love the game. Jack is a late bloomer and a great listener. If he continues to improve on his game at 6'9-6'10. Rutgers will have the Big East Defensive player of the year.

We all know that Grace was once the top player in his class years ago. A top 10 nationally rated middle school player, Grace seemed poised to head to one of the biggest colleges in America when the time warranted. In 2009, after committing to former SJU coach Norm Roberts, Grace and his high school coaches decided to open up his recruitment in 2010.

Grace then picked Manhattan College and will join some of the many NYC players who have gone on to have good careers at a solid Maac college.

I've really watched Grace mature over the years. I know he's had weight issues in High School, which was one of the reasons he wasn't getting the looks he deserved. But, if he has a strong senior season, and gets into ball playing shape. All these expert recruiters are going to feel the pain of passing on the Maac Rookie of the year.

Grace has too many skills for some coaches to pass up, but hey... it's your job to see it.

Nathan Blue, adviser to high school basketball players, gets mixed reaction around New York City

He is not a coach, but he has served as an assistant at two schools and run his own AAU team.

He runs a scouting website, but says its main purpose is to generate publicity.

He claims he has nothing to hide, and yet expresses a strong dislike for background checks (a key reason, he says, that he no longer runs an AAU squad).

Meet Nathan Blue, one of the enigmatic figures on the city high school basketball scene. The 32-year-old from Corona, Queens, has been playing an ambiguous role for more than a decade, making plenty of friends and enemies along the way.

Some regard Blue as a key basketball insider, a friend to anyone in need of a college scholarship. Others clam up at the mention of his name, revealing a disdain for a sometimes shadowy figure who's been accused of steering players into questionable career decisions.

The true Blue likely lies somewhere in between, occupying a realm that he himself can barely discern. One moment, he calls himself an "adviser." The next, he provides a more nebulous description.

"I'm just a guy who floats around and makes things happen," he says.

Since he first appeared on the high school scene in the late 1990s, Blue has made a lot happen, using his growing influence among the college ranks to help scores of players find schools.

He's also left a handful of high school programs in tatters, and damaged his own reputation with some local coaches.

"He's burned a lot of bridges around here," said one PSAL coach who spoke on the condition of anonymity. "He's running out of bridges in New York City."

Such bonds matter little, Blue says, adding that his primary objective is to assist players.

"It's free," he says of the advice he dispenses to any athlete who'll listen. "I do it to help the kids. All I get is the satisfaction of seeing a kid reach his goals."

Buried under such seeming altruism is a personal motive: If Blue consistently develops players and sends them to college, he believes he'll eventually land a job as an NBA scout.

"It's my dream job," he says.

Blue has been preparing for such a role since his days at Newtown HS. Shortly after graduating in 1996, he started attending Kingsborough Community College. A few months later, he decided college wasn't for him and called Newtown coach Pat Torney, asking if he could help coach the squad. Torney made Blue a volunteer assistant.

Newtown was a top PSAL team in the late 1990s, and Blue convinced eventual NBA forward Charlie Villanueva to attend the school. Two years later, Villanueva transferred to Blair Academy, a prep school in New Jersey, on Blue's advice. Newtown's dominance gradually dissipated, and Torney hasn't spoken to Blue since.

Torney, who's normally a gregarious personality, turns surly when asked about his former assistant.

"We kind of parted ways after (Charlie)," Torney says. "I gave him the opportunity to work as an assistant. We just didn't see eye to eye on a couple things."

A similar incident occurred at Forest Hills HS, Blue's most recent stop. Blue arrived there in 2008 to work with top prospect Maurice Harkless. This past spring, on Blue's advice, the senior-to-be announced that he will attend South Kent (Conn.) Prep in the fall, to the disappointment of Forest Hills coach Ben Chobhaphand.

Blue notes that both players made the proper move. Villanueva signed a long-term pact with the Detroit Pistons last season, and Harkless is a nationally recruited forward.

There are more Blue success stories. Afam Muojeke, for example, graduated from McClancy in 2006, attended prep school on Blue's recommendation and is now thriving at the University of Wyoming. Queens product Rainier Rickards also attended a prep school on Blue's advice, landed at St. Francis College and (with Blue's help) transferred to St. Catherine College, an NAIA school in Kentucky.

"People think I only have these top kids, because that's what everyone talks about," Blue says. "They don't talk about the kid with diabetes at the NAIA school (Rickards). But I'll help anyone."

Blue goes to great lengths to help. He ran a series of camps in 2007-08, intent on giving unheralded players a chance to generate some attention. For the past few years, he's also run realscout.net, a blog that really has little to do with scouting. Blue, who works full-time as an administrative assistant at Verizon, says he funds these endeavors out of his own pocket.

"I want to draw attention to local kids," he says.

Blue knows players across the spectrum of ability, and he understands the nuances of recruiting. "Division II coaches want D-I players; D-I coaches want pros," he says.

That expertise has endeared Blue to college coaches, who are always searching for talent.

"He's been around good players," says one Atlantic 10 assistant. "When Nate tells me a kid is good, I'll check him out. He's a respected guy."

Still, Blue seems to prefer operating on the periphery. He ran an AAU squad a few years ago and worked for a time with the Long Island Panthers. He no longer coaches, he says, because NCAA rules mandate that coaches at NCAA-certified events submit to a background check.

"I don't like background checks," he says, refusing to elaborate.

Blue says he has passed up a handful of collegiate assistant coaching offers. He says that's partly because most programs won't hire a coach without a college degree (he recently returned to school) and partly to avoid NCAA recruiting rules, which govern when and where a coach can watch or contact a high school player.

"I'd rather not have boundaries," he says. " . . . If I'm an NBA scout, I can go to any game, watch any player. I'm hoping with what I'm doing now, the league will say, 'Hey, this guy knows how to find talent.' Then, I'm in."

Until then, Blue plans to continue to "make things happen," as he puts it, in New York City.

"This is what I do," he says. "Hopefully, someone's watching."

I know it's been so long since you heard from me. But, life has been crazy. Anyway, how about Lebron James to the Miami Heat, David Stern being ticked off, and the cavs owner going crazy all in the span of a couple of hours. I didn't get a chance to see any of the lebronmainia, but like life, it was full of drama and anticipation.

I was a little surprised the Knicks sent Isiah Thomas to speak to his people, but I knew Thomas was going to leave those kids at that school out to dry, he just wanted to stay relevant and seem like a educator in a time when things weren't looking so good for him.

First, I'd like to wish much success in the NBA to all the New York players who didnt make it. Samardo Samuels, Edgar Sosa, Trevon Hughes, Greedy Peterson, and Sylven Landesberg come to mind. You guys didn't get selected out of the field sixty. But you got a good chance making a impression in the various summer leagues that are about to take place.

Now, I've had the chance to be around Devin Ebanks and Lance Stephenson more than the average fan. Those who remember know that these two guys went to Bishop Loughlin HS for maybe a two days before Lance transferred to Lincoln and at seasons end, Ebanks was headed to prep.

I seen Lance abuse grown men at a young age, and Ebanks looking like KD before we heard of KD. I remember Lance going at OJ, and Ebanks on the other court at ABCD going crazy on everybody else.

Thinking back at all the hundreds of games, I watched these two play...I can see how they got chosen into the NBA over Hundreds of thousands of Eligible Candidates.

I just don't understand how other teams will justify passing them up, in years to come. Goodluck to all.

No Place Like Home "Lance wants to stay home"

Lance Stephenson admits that he’ll be happy whenever he’s selected and wherever he winds up in tonight’s much-anticipated NBA Draft.

But if the former Lincoln High School forward has his druthers, he’d love to begin his professional career where he established his reputation as one of the top amateur players in the nation: Madison Square Garden.

“I always wanted to play in the Garden,” said the four-time P.S.A.L. champion and all-time leading scorer in New York high school hoops history, after his afternoon workout with the hometown Knicks on Saturday. “I grew up playing in the Garden since high school. If the Knicks pick me, it would be a dream come true to play my home games here.”

Stephenson, who was scheduled to show off his skills for the New Jersey (soon-to-be-Brooklyn) Nets as well yesterday, hasn’t arrived at this momentous evening without considerable static.

Once tabbed a can’t-miss prospect who only needed a year of fine-tuning in the NCAA before rising to superstardom in the NBA, the 6-foot-6, 220-pound Coney Island native has endured a rough ride, due mostly to his own indiscretions both on and off the court.

Stephenson spent his senior year at Lincoln fighting off a sexual abuse charge, which he eventually pleaded down to a disorderly conduct. There were rampant rumors that his eligibility would be in question at the college level due to alleged monies he received for an on-line reality show.

“Born Ready” also developed a reputation as a bit of a prima donna, getting into altercations with teammates and drawing the occasional suspension from coach Dwayne “Tiny” Morton, who groomed Sebastian Telfair for the NBA prior to Stephenson’s arrival.

But Cincinnati coach Mick Cronin, who enjoyed Stephenson’s services this past season, believes the reigning Big East Rookie of the Year is prepared to shake off his character issues and live up to his star status in the league where they pay for play.

“Lance is a very determined and hardworking young man and he knows that he has much to learn and must improve as a player,” Cronin said upon Stephenson’s announcement to enter the Draft back in April.

“Lance and his family are very aware of the path that lies ahead for him, and one thing that I have 100 percent confidence in is that Lance is willing to work as hard as he can to reach his potential.”

Ironically, Stephenson passed up a chance to play at St. John’s this winter, citing the need to get away from all the local attention as one of the primary factors in choosing Cincinnati.

But when pressed to explain that decision this past week, he once again expounded on his love for all things New York.

“I always grew up wanting to play for the Knicks,” the 19-year-old explained. “If they pick me, I’ll be very happy. So I’m just going to keep working to get better every day.”

The Nets, who have the third overall pick tonight, are keeping their first choice a mystery. Forward Derrick Favors of Georgia Tech, Kentucky center DeMarcus Cousins, Syracuse swingman Wesley Johnson and Georgetown’s pivot-man Greg Monroe are all reportedly still in the mix.

Pending the outcome of picks 1 and 2, which will likely see John Wall of Kentucky go to Washington and Ohio State’s Evan Turner land in Philadelphia, the Nets won’t have an opportunity to seriously consider Stephenson until their second pick (27th overall in the first round).

New Jersey will also have a high second-rounder, 31st overall, and could see Stephenson as a work-in-progress that will draw strong local interest when the franchise lands in Downtown Brooklyn in 2012.

The Knicks own two second-round picks, 38th and 39th overall, but will doubtlessly wait to see how the first 37 picks shake out before seriously considering Stephenson.

Telfair, who grabbed three city crowns at Lincoln and set the state scoring standard before Stephenson erased his record, went 13th overall in the 2004 draft to Portland.

The 6-foot point guard, the smallest player ever chosen straight out of high school, has been a journeyman at best during his six NBA seasons, spending time with the Blazers, Boston Celtics, Minnesota Timberwolves, Los Angeles Clippers and Cleveland Cavaliers.

Stephenson projects at a higher level than Telfair entering this talent-rich draft, but isn’t likely to go before late in the first round or early in the second.

That lands him right in the crosshairs of the Knicks and Nets, both of whom could land a diamond in the rough with a high ceiling for improvement, and perhaps even more importantly, drawing power.

But for Stephenson, the dream of playing in his own backyard is supercedes by his desire to simply make an NBA team.

“It doesn’t matter where I get picked, as long as I get picked,” he said

Recruiting: NBPA Top 100 not your typical camp

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Early Wednesday afternoon inside John Paul Jones Arena, the LCD boards surrounding the basketball court began scrolling through a prestigious list of names, welcoming players to this year's NBPA Top 100 camp by not so subtly reminding them of the stars who have participated in this event before.

Throughout the day, the 2010 campers trickled in, many looking up to scan the alphabetical roll call zipping past and looping around again - from Hasaan Adams down to Thaddeus Young.

In all, 126 former campers were listed. The legends of today, we were reminded, were once the rising stars of tomorrow.

Kobe Bryant, Dwight Howard and Kevin Durant.

Rajon Rondo and Brandon Jennings. Shane Battier and Ty Lawson.

So when camp director Tim McCormick stopped to formally greet this year's prep campers, he did so with great alacrity.

"Welcome to the most important week of your summer," McCormick said.

The guest list for this gathering is pretty darn elite, featuring many of the nation's best high school basketball players - most from the Class of 2011 with a sprinkling of 2012 and 2013 stars mixed in. Many of these kids will soon emerge as big-time headliners in college. And at least a handful will likely go on to land jobs in the NBA.

So from the get-go Wednesday, McCormick wanted these kids to understand the exclusivity of the camp and the fast track they're all now on in their basketball careers.

"I want to encourage you to embrace it," McCormick said, "to be excited about the possibilities that exist."

Well-rounded camp
This is the 18th year of the NBPA Top 100 camp. And it's worth noting that in the grand scope of the summer, this is an event that packs quite a powerful punch for players and their parents. Unlike so many of the traveling team tournaments that dominate the offseason schedule, this is more than a meat market for scouts and reporters and curious fans to evaluate talent.

The NBPA Camp is a seminar of sorts with the league all these kids dream of playing in one day doing its best to tutor them on the keys to success while warning them of the pitfalls that swallow so many dreams.

In addition to the skill development stations and practices and highly spirited games these players will take part in over the next three days, there are also classroom sessions designed to teach lessons about career development, financial planning, health management and, yes, real world sex education.

Former North Carolina All-American Jerry Stackhouse, who just completed his 15th season in the NBA, is a counselor/coach here, one of more than 35 current or former pro players working directly with the campers. Stackhouse, like McCormick, wants the players to understand how extraordinary this opportunity is.

"They made a commitment to come here and that's a commitment to getting better," Stackhouse said. "So we want to put an emphasis on that. This is special, a rare opportunity to be here and learn all that you can learn from so many great teachers. So soak it all up. Be a sponge. And don't be shy."

And when advice like that comes from players like Stackhouse or Chris Duhon or Theo Ratliff, it's hard for the high school stars not to listen.

"You know from the get-go, they know what they're talking about," said P.J. Hairston, a Class of 2011 standout committed to UNC. "When these guys tell you something new, it's something they learned in college or somewhere along the way to the NBA and you have to listen."

Extra drive
Just as it will be special the next three days to watch the best of the best do battle on the basketball court, it will be equally telling to the NBA folks to gauge just how alert and eager these kids are in the extracurricular sessions.

All afternoon Wednesday, McCormick used the word "opportunity" to hammer home his message. And then he made sure to single out Kobe Bryant as the poster child of this camp. The Lakers star may be preparing for Game 7 of the NBA finals, just one win away from his fifth world championship. But 14 years ago, he was just like many of these high school campers looking to turn his special skills into something legendary.

"We knew Kobe Bryant was going to be the greatest player in the league," McCormick said. "We knew it when he came through here 14 years ago. And the reason we knew it was because in the classroom he was a sponge. He asked questions. He was attentive. He understood responsibility He couldn't wait to challenge the best guys. He took that all on. Kobe Bryant was special in the way that he prepared and focused."

Every player in this camp, McCormick noted, has remarkable talent. But it's the ones with that extra drive and an insatiable hunger for knowledge that will leave with a leg up.

Hairston admits he found himself looking up at the names on the LCD board several times Wednesday. And that in itself, gave him a little extra kick.

"I read every name up there," he said. "And I just sat there for a second thinking that one day my name could be rolling around across that board. And another kid this age may be looking up there saying, 'Oh, I know P.J. Hairston. He's in the NBA. Now I want to be up there too.' "

But, as he gets older, and slower and may never be where he is today. I figure, i'd respect one of the best to ever do it, while he's still on top of his game. FYI I'm a knick fan.lol

After Lakers win, Celtics' Glen Davis bounces back, talking smack (Plus, Shannon Brown Alley.OMG)

As soon the Lakers finished destroying the Celtics, 89-67, in Tuesday's Game 6, evening the series at three games apiece, Celtics forward Glen Davis started drooling.

Not the literal drooling he did in the "Shrek and Donkey" Game 4, when he (Shrek) dropped 18 points and photographers snapped some dribble leaving his lips as he roared following a key bucket as Nate Robinson (Donkey) climbed his back.

No, he was metaphorically drooling, about the idea of a Game 7 for an NBA title.

"I love it," he said. "This is what it's all about. It's what you guys are going to talk about for years. You guys are going to remember this moment. You're going to remember Thursday forever.

"I can't wait. I can't wait to step up on the floor and win here in L.A."

Come again?

That last part sounded a tad cocky, but Davis, who grabbed nine rebounds but didn't score at all Tuesday, was just clearing his throat.

He continued with his postgame speech, which ended with a few more lines that bordered on boastful, such as "We'll come to play, we'll compete, and we'll be there at the end holding the trophy."

From the top:

"We've got to go get it," Davis said. "We went through too many ups and downs to lose like this. Out of all the teams in the league, we're the ones who struggled.

"We went through the bumps and bruises. We went through the 'we're old.' We went through the 'oh, they can't play, they're the fourth seed, they're going to get beat by Cleveland, they're going to get beat by Orlando.'

"And we're here now, despite of what everybody else thinks. So you think we're going to just let this go? No. We accept the challenge, and we want it. That's point-blank simple.

"We could have gave up a long time ago and look forward to next year. But no. We're here. So we're going to take it while we're here and understand that we've been through ups and downs and we deserve it more than them."

But pray tell, Davis, where was this desire in their Game 6 rout, in which the Celtics were out-rebounded 52-39, outscored on the bench 25-13 and, in all, put forth the second-lowest-scoring performance in NBA Finals history (only Utah's 54 points against Chicago in 1998 was worse)?

"We came out flat," he said. "They hit us hard and we didn't come back. We understand what's going on here. We want to win. But now it's Game 7. It's not Game 6. It's Game 7. We're not worried about Game 6. Game 6 is Game 6. It's over and done with. I'm talking about Game 7. That's all I can talk about."

After the game, Davis sat at his locker with his head down. He took a while before getting up to shower. Many players came and went before he returned, and he methodically dressed before calmly addressing the media.

"My approach to this game is that I'm too blessed to be stressed," he said. "I don't worry about that. We've got a Game 7. This is not faith. This is free will. We've got to go get it. You can't pray to God and say, 'Oh God, help me' and hope that we win. That's why I say you've got to go get it."

Davis may be counted on more than usual in that game, as it looks likely starting center Kendrick Perkins will not play after sustaining a knee injury in Game 6.

"We've got to get better play out of Baby," Celtics Coach Doc Rivers said, "and I told him that after the game. We do. He has to come in with that spirit he came in the famous Shrek and Donkey game."

If Davis' postgame address was any hint of what's to come, it will be Shrek, not Baby, who shows up Thursday.

HAWTHORNE, Calif. - Sunday at the Nike's third session of the EYBL in the HAX facility just outside of LAX airport was one of the most intense days of basketball the circuit has seen in a while. On the line were several of the 20 automatic bids into July's Peach Jam while teams that were out of the picture for automatic bids did their best to position themselves for one of the four available wild card slots.

After reeling off 19 straight wins during April and May, the Saint Louis Eagles were knocked from the ranks of the undefeated at the EYBL by Portland based ICP. Meanwhile, the Kyle Anderson led Playaz Basketball Club finished the evening as the sole remaining undefeated team.

Through three sessions of the EYBL, no team has stood out more than Jimmy Salmons' Playaz Basketball Club. The New Jersey based crew hasn't just been beating opponents, they've been squashing them into the ground while emerging as the team to beat at the Peach Jam in mid-July.

As far as we're concerned, it all starts with the play of Kyle Anderson. The 2012 prospect is tough to describe because he literally plays one through four for his team and he does it well. He can pass, is a cerebral scorer in the mid post, has toughness, is a leader and causes all kinds of problems for opponents. He's got Miami, Virginia Tech, LaSalle, Pittsburgh, St. John's, Xavier, Arizona and Virginia on him early and that list figures to get much longer before it shortens up.

Surrounding Anderson is a great supporting cast. Big man Desmond Hubert is still skinny but has upgraded his offensive game to go along with his shot blocking. Guards Myles Mack and Myles Davis are both a bit undersized but they play with toughness and knock down shots. Then wing Vaughn Gray does a little bit of it all while Derrick Randall gives them another big man who can bruise and control the glass.

More Sunday notables

Mike Gilchrist, SF, Team Final- Rivals.com's #1 player in the class of 2011 showed a lot of why he currently stands atop the rankings. A legit 6-foot-7 with superior body control and quickness, Gilchrist is a standout on both ends of the floor. He has improved his handle, was knocking down tons of pull-up jumpers between 12 and 17 feet while locking down guys all the way from point guards to power forwards. He's going to receive some stiff competition for that top spot this summer but it's still his to lose after watching in Los Angeles.

Quincy Miller, PF, D-One Sports- Chalk up another outstanding nightcap for Miller who totally abused anybody that the Arkansas Wings could throw at him during an efficient and impressive 34 point outing. Needing just 14 shots from the field to do his damage, Miller was a blur off the dribble, skied for dunks in traffic and swished deep threes with his. He lacks strength, but is way too quick and skilled off the bounce for any big man to possibly defend him in space. His tremendous balance allows him to take hits and still get squared for scoring opportunities. He played with passion on both ends and looks to be a kid on a mission right now.

Jakarr Sampson, SF/PF, King James Stars- Sampson has always been a long and active guy who could handle the ball a bit at 6-foot-8. However, he was also wild and out of control much of the time. However, those days may be gone and Sampson is evolving into a true game changer with elite quickness for a guy his size. His team is obviously better with him on the floor making things happen off the bounce and he's added strength to go along with his quickness. He's likely going to need a pretty nice bump in the rankings and could be a beast in a wide open system in college. He's currently hearing from Louisville, Xavier, Ohio State, Michigan State, Baylor, Akron and Cincinnati.

Jerel Scott, SG/SF, Albany City Rocks- The majority of the weekend's offensive production for the City Rocks came from fast rising wing Tyler Harris, but the 6-foot-4 Scott was no slouch himself. A long and wiry slasher with some bounce, he's become very comfortable as a jump shooter -- particularly from the left corner -- and that's enhanced his profile. He's at least an upper level mid major prospect who might even be due a few high major looks.

Joshua Richardson, SF, Athlete's First- A long and athletic 6-foot-5 wing, Richardson has showed flashes all spring long. Sunday afternoon against California Supreme, Richardson was borderline unstoppable. With usual point guard Nino Jackson unavailable for this round of the EYBL, Richardson slid over and played the point for much of the game. In doing so he showed a much better handle and feel for the game than expected while proving unstoppable getting to the rim going right or left. A dangerous jump shooter and potentially high level defender, he could start turning his high major looks into offers if he shows some consistency during July.

Michael Carter-Williams, SG/PG, BABC- M.C.W. has been on an absolute tear since February and it didn't stop in L.A. A slinky combo who is much quicker and stronger than he looks at first glance, he's got one of the most advanced offensive repertoires of anybody in the class of 2011. He's only enhanced his five star standing.

Anthony Fields, PG, D-One Sports- There aren't that many true set-up guys in the class of 2011 and because of that Fields has value. A speedy six-footer who thinks pass first and plays good on the ball defense, he did a good job of putting his guys in position to do what the do best on Saturday. He's planning a June trip to Temple's elite camp and hopes to see Penn State as well. Fields indicated that he feels PSU will be pulling the trigger on a scholarship offer soon.

Chris Walker, PF, Georgia Blazers- A member of the class of 2013, Walker is a baby faced big man who can really motor up and down the court. He already shows promise as an interior scorer with some touch and he can harass defenders as a shot blocker. It's still early, but he's definitely one to watch.

E. Victor Nickerson, SF, Georgia Stars- A long and athletic wing, Nickerson is coming on fast as a prospect and could make a push for the next edition of the Rivals150. He attacks the rim, has improved as a jump shooter and plays with a high activity level on both ends of the floor.

Keith Frazier, SG, Houston Hoops- The Hoops are loaded with young perimeter talent with guys like J-Mychal Reese, Rasheed Sulaimon and the injured L.J. Rose, but the near 6-foot-5 Frazier could be the best of the bunch long term. Only a rising sophomore, Frazier has a big time frame, deep range and a quick trigger. He showed that he can attack to his left and looks to have plenty of tools at his disposal on the offensive end of the ball.

Andrew Andrews, PG, ICP- Maybe the breakout player of the day, the six foot tall Andrews was a stud against the St. Louis Eagles. Brimming with confidence after knocking down some early jumpers, the Portland (Ore.) Benson product went to work on the defensive minded Eagles off of the bounce. He scored on several tough drives, pulled up for jumpers and carried his team with his confidence and control of the game.

LeAntwan Luckett, SG, Jackson Tigers- He's got a little bit of a hair on fire style of play to him, but the athletic 6-foot-4 wing goes out and gets buckets. He can face you up and drill threes from the wing, attacks quickly off the bounce and is an exciting transition finisher. He needs to improve his handle and dribble himself into trouble a little less, but he's cemented his four star status.

Mike Shaw, PF, Mac Irvin Fire- When he shows motivation, the 6-foot-8 Shaw is easily among the most skilled PF's in the class of 2011. He can handle the ball, shoots pretty well to the three point line and has underrated quickness and athleticism. He's gotten stronger and was looking more like the guy so many thought he could be at a young age on Sunday.

Sam Thompson, Mycheal Henry, Wayne Blackshear, SF/SG's, Mac Irvin Fire- There isn't a better trio of wing on the circuit and there's not likely to be one quite as talented as them for a while. Thompson is the most athletic of the bunch and has slid into an Evan Turner type role. Henry has the best strength and the Illinois commitment can shoot the three or finish with dunks and pull-ups. Blackshear, is the most polished of the group and has a great feel for when to turn it on and off.

Jamari Traylor, PF, Mean Streets- It will be interesting to see how Traylor's recruitment unfolds. A good looking insider, he's among the meanest power forwards in the country. He's got wiry strength, superior quickness and ridiculously explosive athleticism. However, the question is whether he has anything on the offensive end outside of dunks. High energy guy who rebounds and runs the floor.

Jarnell Stokes, PF/C, Memphis YOMCA- Because he's a bit on the short side, Stokes has some trouble scoring straight up against elite big man defenders. However, the class of 2012 standout figures out those guys real quick and is a cerebral low post player who finds his way to the line and is a crafty scorer around the rim. He's gotten his body into great shape and has improved his explosiveness as well.

Final notes from Sunday action

Malcolm Gilbert is a young man with tremendous size who has really improved his mobility. The Albany City Rocks center is running the floor and doing what he can to get on the glass and impact the game as a shot blocker. He's not much of a threat on the offensive end but his size alone dictates that he get lots of high major looks. ? Boo Williams combo guard Brian Darden hit the shot of the day when his pull-up 23 footer found nothing but the bottom of the net giving Boo a one point win over a tough Oakland Soldiers squad. It also produced a memorable post game run/hop/fist-pump celebration from the squad's usually reserved namesake and head coach. ? Big man Ajayi Olamilekhan of Boo Williams and Quality Education Academy will be an interesting guy this summer. The kid is raw all the way around, but he's got a big time frame, a high revving motor and terrific size and strength in his 6-foot-9 frame. ? Want to give Kyle Wiltjer some credit for increasing his productivity on the interior. The 6-foot-9 four man has made his reputation as a sweet shooting and skilled big, but he's also impressive around the rim where he hits defenders with well a developed series of post moves. He's continued to add strength and the play on the interior has only opened up his perimeter game. ?

Austin Kuemper of Portland based ICP is just a solid big who understands what his strengths and limitations are. A strong, 6-foot-9 insider, Kuemper loves to bang, has some soft touch to 12 feet and plays with an edge to him. West Coast high majors will surely be taking a look. ? Look for Rotary Select wing Anrio Adams to explode during the month of July. A solid 6-foot-3 wing, the 2012 standout is built to score and he's got a quick trigger and loads of confidence. ? One of the better 2013 wings we've seen to date is Team Texas' Isaac Hamilton. A solid 6-foot-4 with long arms and a pure stroke from deep, he doesn't say much or show much emotion but the potentially elite shooting guard prospect gets a lot done out there. ?

Welsh calls it Quits

Newly-hired Hofstra men's basketball coach Tim Welsh resigned on Monday, three days after he was arrested and charged with drunken driving on Long Island, the university said.

"The university accepted the resignation in the best interests of the university and of the men's basketball program," Hofstra said in a brief statement announcing the move.

His lawyer did not immediately return a telephone message. Welsh's voicemail box was full.

Hofstra suspended Welsh without pay on Friday after learning through media reports that Nassau County police had charged him with driving while intoxicated in Levittown, N.Y., earlier in the morning.

Nassau County police said Welsh was found stopped in his Lexus about 1 a.m. ET Friday at a steady green light at an intersection. He was taken into custody and charged with driving while intoxicated and then later arraigned, where he pleaded not guilty. He is due back in court on May 4.

Welsh, who worked at ESPN and SNY as a college basketball analyst, was fired at Providence two years ago after a decade-long run.

Hofstra hired Welsh on March 31, giving him a contract worth more than $600,000 a year. He also coached at Iona and spent the past two seasons as a commentator for ESPNU.

Welsh replaced Tom Pecora when he took the job at Fordham. Pecora was 155-126 in nine seasons at Hofstra, with three straight NIT appearances from 2005 to 2007.

Welsh spent 10 seasons at Providence, leading the Friars to the NCAA tournament in 2001 and 2004. His record was 160-143.

I had this whole big story written on the demise of NYC Basketball, how the country has been stating that we haven't produced a any real relevant players in recent years, regarding the NBA. I had names to back up, who's really from NYC shining in the NBA? I even praised Stephon Marbury as being the only star, who was the man on his team.

Respects went out to great coaches and scouts who are no longer with us. I went off on a couple of websites and media outlets who give players ratings and let others fall thru the cracks. Well, I really had a idea, that article wasn't going to be posted. Unless I really wanted to walk around looking like a salty older man, who's ideas have been so outdated, hes looked at as a joke.

The keys to helping NYC get back on track are..less social sites and video games, less aau tournaments, and less worrying about rankings. Skill training, and good old park play is the way to go. So, with all of that being said...NYC is so bad..think about this. Our McDonald's All-American didn't even make at worst the Jordan regional game...and nobody said a word..Sad state.

* SG Lamount Samuels 6'3 Notre Dame Prep Mass (Formerly Boys & Girls/Adelphi), has committed to Mike Rice at Robert Morris (NEC).

* SF Mike Poole 6'6 St. Benedicts Prep NJ had a visit yesterday from URI coaching staff, Poole's visit was postponed from Sunday, due to family reasons.

* SF Alex Hall 6'5 was last years NAIA Conference Rookie of the Year at St. Catherine's in Kentucky. This year, he will head to Junior College and will be making that decision in the next week.

* Russ Smith is going to surprise alot of people at L'Ville, I really can't see him not doing good in the Big East..hes a high energy guard, expect a good season.

* I was surprised that Rod Odom (Vanderbilt), didnt make the Jordan Regional Game, other than that excellent game by MVP's Ryan Rhoomes & Derrick Williams...but I kind of thought Fuquan Edwin (SHU) or JJ Moore (Pitt) was going to get the Surburban MVP.

* Congrats to Tom Herrion (Pitt) on his Head Coaching Job at Marshall, now it's time for Brandin Knight to step his game up as a main recruiter.

* I was in the Beacon last night, watching Ryan Williams aka Special FX, shoot jumpshots.....I felt bad for him, because once youre known as a dunker....its hard to recover...ask Chris Lowery or Gerald Green...thank god, Josh Smith could rebound and block shots...

SF- Quincy Miller 6'10 D-One Sports (2011)

"Quincy was showing the all around versatility. At 6'10 he can shoot the jumper, post you, drive to the basket and is a pretty good defender. His team went 1-4 this weekend, but without a doubt, they're the most entertaining to watch by far...and it all starts with Miller."

"It wasn't his best basketball, but Christmas was part of a solid Team Final Team.. which went 4-1. Christmas is still trying to establish what he can do on the offensive end, but defensively, hes solid as a rock."

"You can write profiles on almost all the kids from Playaz Club and they would all read the same. "Talented, D-One Prospect." But, what makes Mack different is, hes always been looked at as being too small. SF- Maurice Harkless 6'8 NY Gauchos (2011)

"Best said, the kid played below his talent level Friday and Saturday, moving from his natural 3/2 slot to defending the 5. Harkless looked out of place in Saturdays games, but turned it around on Sunday against Quincy Miller scoring 27pts, and against Mike Shaw 24pts. In the end, his squad finished 4-1 and Harkless will continue to get bigger and stronger as the summer progresses. While some people hit the panic button on saturday, Harkless hit the "Lets Go" button on Sunday."

SG- Anthony Wroten Jr. 6'5 Seattle Rotary (2011)- Pictured

"Guess who's back? Yup, yup, Wroten is back, while he still shaking off some cobwebs. he shook himself free of any one-on-one defenders. Seriously, Wroten looked real good at the point this weekend. He's sorta like the OJ mayo of this class, very respected and his overall toughness cannot be matched by anyone in 2011."

PF- Stephon Mosley 6'7 NY Gauchos 16s (2012)

"Its very hard not to love this kids game. One, of the most physical players in the 16under division. Mosley embraces the physical part of the game like no other. Rather quiet on the court, Mosley is a Mid-Major prospect, who should be on your radar for this 2012 class. He's a great kid, who plays a lot stronger than his 205 pound frame.

PG- Michael Carter-Williams 6'5 BABC (2011)

"He played solid in the one game I watched. Shot the ball well, made some nice plays, mixed it up on defense, and built a strong rep...hey what else could you ask for.

PG- Derrick Wilson 5'11 NY Gauchos (2011)

"Played a lot of off guard this weekend, made some real huge shots on the gauchos team that went 4-1. Didnt understand why his name wasn't out there more, but after this weekend, I'm sure hes listed as a mid-major prospect.

PG-Marquis Teague 6'2 Spiece Indy Heat (2011)

"Simply put the best prospect in the class, I didn't need to watch him play more than two games. He takes no plays off and finds a way to take control of the game, scoring when needed and making the perfect pass to the open teammate. Last year it was debatable who was number one, this year, its easily his to maintain. "

SF- Michael Gilchrist 6'7 Team Final (2011)

"Gillchrist was running the point most of the weekend, or point forward. It seems as though he's still dominate, but he has a hitch in his jumper....now I'm not really big on downing a kid and I think we all tend to pick on them, when they're still developing athletes. But, the hitch needs to be figured out. He dominated on defense as usual, except against Wroten, but offensively his spin move to the basket is unstoppable. "

PG- Tyrone Johnson 6'2 Team Final (2011)

"Johnson started phase I, of his national introduction this weekend. He was crafty in getting to the basket and didn't dominate the rock to do it. Very efficient and didn't do anything other than make himself an elite prospect to watch for the majors."

PG- Javon Thomas 6'1 NY Gauchos 16s (2013)

"Thomas seems to be coming into his own, after his big breakout performance in the Our Savior New America vs St. Benedict's NJ game (25pts, 11assts), JT is looking unreal. I never understood what the hype was about, until this weekend. He does a lot of things with the ball that translates into positives for his squad and timeouts for the opposition...a must watch for the summer. "

"His face up game was on point, his beast game was on point...Johnson looked very special this weekend. The most aggressive player in the event, Johnson grabbed every rebound, blocked every shot, and scored more per minute than any forward at the event not named Miller. His face up jumper was dropping and as expected, Arizona got a steal."

Syracuse's Wes Johnson to enter NBA Draft

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — When Wes Johnson was asked what he thought Syracuse fans would remember most about him, he chose personal over performance.

"My smile," Johnson said Monday, beaming as usual as he announced he was declaring for the NBA draft and hiring an agent.

Fans also will remember the blocks, dunks, 3-pointers, rebounds and steals — plus the unselfishness the Big East player of the year displayed every time he took the floor.

Johnson, one of only a handful of four-year transfers Jim Boeheim has accepted in his 34 years as head coach, averaged a team-leading 16.5 points and 8.5 rebounds while starting all 35 games in 2009-10. The 6-foot-7 small forward, who spent two years at Iowa State, is considered a potential lottery pick, maybe even a top 5 choice.

"I'm still speechless about it," Johnson said.

In making the announcement that everyone expected and Syracuse fans dreaded, Johnson said it was a difficult decision because he enjoyed school and his teammates. He said he would continue taking classes and expects to graduate this summer.

"I think my mom, my family will be pleased by that," he said.

Johnson said that before making the decision to skip his final year of eligibility, he talked at length with his family, Boeheim and assistant coach Rob Murphy, who recruited Johnson and has become close to the Orange star.

Boeheim declined to comment, preferring to let Johnson have the spotlight to himself. Johnson's teammates were happy and saddened by the news.

"I'm happy for him. It's the right decision for him, his family," Orange guard Scoop Jardine said. "We had a great year with Wes. What more can we ask for?"

Johnson, who sat out last season because of NCAA rules, blossomed into one of the best players in the nation under Boeheim.

"He's just a solid player, good night in and night out, and he's quiet about it," Boeheim said at midseason. "He's the most unselfish player I've ever coached."

Lightly recruited out of high school in Corsicana, Texas, Johnson almost became lost in the sometimes shady world of prep school basketball. After committing to play at Louisiana-Monroe in 2005, he changed his mind when the coach who recruited him left. Johnson briefly considered junior college in Texas before opting to go to prep school to improve his standardized test scores and maybe his college of choice.

Johnson made stops at the Patterson School in North Carolina, Eldon Academy in Michigan, and lived with his brother in Detroit before committing to Iowa State.

If not for Kevin Durant, Johnson likely would have been Big 12 freshman of the year in 2006-07, when he started 30 games for the Cyclones and averaged more than 12 points and nearly eight rebounds. But after an injury-plagued sophomore season Johnson had a falling-out with the coaching staff and transferred.

After sitting the requisite year but making an impact in Syracuse practices, Johnson burst on the national scene again in November, earning most outstanding player honors at the 2K Sports Classic tournament. He scored 42 points and grabbed 19 rebounds in lopsided victories over California and defending national champion North Carolina at Madison Square Garden.

Despite a hard fall in a game against Providence in early February that limited his mobility, then an injury to his right (shooting) hand a week later against Connecticut, Johnson did not miss a game and helped lead Syracuse to a No. 1 ranking in the AP poll the first week in March. Syracuse was just the sixth team to go from unranked in the opening poll to No. 1.

Fully healed by the time postseason play began, Johnson led the Orange to easy victories over Vermont and Gonzaga in the first two rounds of the NCAA tournament, scoring a career-high 31 points and snaring 14 rebounds against the Zags. Syracuse finished 30-5 after losing to Butler in the round of 16.

Johnson was a finalist for the Naismith Trophy, presented each year by the Atlanta Tipoff Club to the top college basketball player in the nation. He was also a contender for the Wooden Award and the Oscar Robertson Trophy, presented to the nation's top player by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association.

"He's a player that can do it all," Jardine said. "He didn't get a lot of credit for how good he is on the defensive end. He's going to be an exciting player next year to watch."

North Carolina's Ed Davis and West Virginia's Ebanks ready for NBA Draft

United States (AHN) - North Carolina Tar Heels sophomore big man Ed Davis recently joined West Virginia Mountaineers sophomore forward Devin Ebanks in declaring for the 2010 NBA Draft.

Davis, 20, led the Tar Heels in shot blocking and rebounding and was second in scoring before missing the final 13 games with a broken left wrist.

"I've had two great years at North Carolina both as a player and a student and now I want to pursue my lifelong dream of playing in the NBA," said Davis in a statement. "I love being a Tar Heel and am proud to know that I will always be part of this unique family. I want to thank Coach Williams for giving me the opportunity to play for Carolina. My coaches and teammates have helped me develop as a player and a person and I will miss helping them get the Tar Heel program back on top."

Davis, (6-foot-9, 215 lb.) is projected as a top-10 pick in the draft, but also expressed his desire to continue pursuing his degree.

"I will continue to work on my degree, something I have promised my parents I would do. Even though I am giving up my final two years of eligibility, I will continue to pursue my family's dream of earning my college degree," said Davis.

Ebanks, 20, averaged 12.0 points with a team-best 8.1 rebounds per contest in helping lead the Mountaineers to the the Final Four.

"I have decided to enter my name into the 2010 NBA draft," Ebanks said in a statement. "I spoke to my mother and the coaching staff, and we have decided that I should explore my options to pursue a dream that I have had since I was a little kid. I want to thank West Virginia University, my coaches, my teammates and all the great fans."

Crawford hasn't hired agent

CINCINNATI -- Xavier's Jordan Crawford decided Wednesday that he will explore the possibility of entering the NBA draft while leaving open his option of returning for another season with the Musketeers.

The sophomore guard led the Atlantic 10 in scoring at 20.5 points per game and had a sensational NCAA tournament, helping the Musketeers reach the round of 16 for the third straight season. Xavier lost a 101-96 double-overtime game to Kansas State in the regional semifinal, with Crawford making one clutch shot after another. He averaged 29 points in the tournament.

Crawford hasn't hired an agent. Players have until May 8 to withdraw from consideration and retain their college eligibility.

"I wouldn't be surprised if at the end of the day he went in either direction -- he goes to the NBA or he comes back for his junior season at Xavier," coach Chris Mack said, in a phone interview.

Crawford sat out last season after transferring from Indiana. He wants to get a better idea of where he'd be drafted before deciding whether to hire an agent and leave school.

"I really felt Jordan's goal all along has been to perform well enough to be considered a solid NBA first-round draft pick," Mack said. "At this point, there's not enough information to solidly know where he stands, where he'd be slotted."

Favors Will Enter Draft

Next stop, the NBA.

The freshman All-Americans were among five Kentucky players who declared for the NBA draft on Wednesday, an exodus that includes freshman guard Eric Bledsoe, freshman center Daniel Orton and junior forward Patrick Patterson.

Wall and Cousins are expected to be among the first few players selected after leading the Wildcats to a remarkable turnaround season in Calipari's first year on the job.

Nash resigns at St. Francis College

Brooklyn Heights, NY (Sports Network) - St. Francis College announced the resignation of men's basketball coach Brian Nash on Wednesday.

Nash cited personal reasons for his departure after five years at the helm. The Terriers finished 11-18 last season and did not qualify for the Northeast Conference Tournament.

"We thank Brian for his time, dedication and commitment to helping our student-athletes develop into both better people and better players," said St. Francis College director of athletics Irma Garcia.

Nash was named the 16th coach in the school's history in March of 2005 after Ron Ganulin's contract was not renewed. He previously held assistant coaching positions at Seton Hall (2001-04), Siena (2001-02), St. Bonaventure (1994-2000) and Sacred Heart (1993-94).

Iona Hires Cluess From C.W. Post

Iona College players met with their new coach, Tim Cluess, in the team’s locker room Wednesday night. Cluess, formerly the coach at C.W. Post, accepted the job of replacing Kevin Willard, who departed recently to take the same position at Seton Hall. Iona’s sports information director, Brian Beyrer, said a news conference would be scheduled for Friday.

Cluess, who went 98-23 the last five seasons at C.W. Post, has ties to the New York metropolitan area. He was the head coach at St. Mary’s High on Long Island the previous 19 years, and he also played at St. John’s and finished his career at Hofstra.

The move came as a surprise after Fran Fraschilla, the former Manhattan and St. John’s coach, turned down the job, choosing to stay at ESPN as a broadcaster. Norm Roberts, who was recently fired at St. John’s, was also considered a candidate. The Louisville assistant Steve Masiello, who previously interviewed at Wagner, was a finalist.

Rutgers basketball coach Fred Hill could be fired! Plus P.diddy NCAA Chip Intro

Rutgers basketball coach Fred Hill survived the wave of firings that recently swept through the area’s colleges. However, it’s possible he might not survive a second wave.

Under investigation by the university for his behavior at a recent on-campus baseball game, Hill is facing potential termination for cause, according to a source close to the program. The source said that Rutgers’ Athletic Director Tim Pernetti is awaiting word from the University’s lawyers to see if Hill’s recent outburst at a game last Thursday is enough to warrant his firing without Rutgers having to pay him a $1.8 million buyout. Those around the program believe a decision could come within the next two or three days.

In a story that appeared on MyCentralJersey.com, Hill reportedly yelled profanities at the baseball coach from Pittsburgh at the end of a game last Thursday, one that Rutgers won with a late rally. Hill’s father, Fred Sr., is the longtime Rutgers baseball coach.

Pernetti released a statement that confirmed the school’s investigation of the incident, saying “The reports and eyewitness accounts are very concerning.” According to the source, Pernetti is doubly annoyed because he told the younger Hill not to return to watch any more games of the series, which Hill ignored and Pernetti witnessed.

Pernetti only recently stood by Hill despite Hill’s third-to-last place in the Big East conference and yet another failure to garner a post-season bid. While fellow Big East schools Seton Hall and St. John’s fired their coaches as did other area schools such as Fordham and Wagner, Pernetti stuck with Hill, not only because of the hefty buyout but because of a returning nucleus of players.

However, multiple reports Tuesday, including one in the Star Ledger, say that leading scorer Mike Rosario is looking to transfer and to incoming recruit Gil Biruta of St. Benedict’s Prep asked to be released from his letter of intent. Those two potential defections, combined with the questionable behavior, could spell the end for Hill.

Should Pernetti decide to make a change, expect former Boston College coach Al Skinner to be on the short list of replacements.

Sullinger shakes off food poisoning, scores 22 points

In a late-morning text message to friends and media members yesterday, Northland coach Satch Sullinger regretted that his son Jared might sit out the McDonald's All American Game because of food poisoning.

Calling his son "a warrior," Satch was quick to add that Jared would do everything humanly possible to play.

Following a trip to a hospital for an IV to regain his fluids, Jared Sullinger not only took the court last night but earned MVP for the East in its 107-104 loss to the West last night in Value City Arena.

"I had some hot wings for a late-night snack," said Sullinger, a 6-foot-9, 260-pound center headed to Ohio State. "I guess I got food poisoning, and that led to dehydration.

"Earlier in the morning, I didn't think I was going to play. I just felt terrible. But after the IV and some medicine, I started feeling a little better and decided to give it a try."

The James A. Naismith national player of the year and a two-time Mr. Basketball in Ohio, Sullinger wasn't just the hometown choice for MVP. In a game typically dominated by guards, he finished with a game-high 22 points, with seven rebounds, three steals and two assists. His 7-of-11 field-goal shooting included going 2 of 3 on three-pointers. He also was 6 of 6 at the free-throw line.

Not bad for a player thought to be at death's door earlier in the day.

"All I hoped to prove to the Buckeye fans tonight was that I could offer some physical play and not be afraid to get my nose bloody," he said.

In fact, Sullinger and fellow Ohio State recruit Deshaun Thomas of Bishop Luers in Fort Wayne, Ind., nearly brought the East back from an 11-point deficit in the final 2:41.

"Me and Deshaun talked about showing Buckeye fans what they've got coming in next year," Sullinger said. "We wanted to put on a show, and I think we did all right, considering everything."

Sullinger hit a three-pointer to shave the margin to 102-98 with 1:42 left, and Thomas scored twice in the final 1:26 (one on an assist from Sullinger) to tie the score at 104.

The West, however, called a timeout with 30 seconds left to plan a final shot.

Dribbling down the right baseline, Brandon Knight of Coral Springs, Fla., appeared to stiff-arm defender Kendall Marshall to the floor, then maneuvered for an open three-point shot that he nailed with three seconds left.

A 60-foot desperation heave by Sullinger just missed the rim as time expired.

"The play we drew up was to get Harrison (Barnes) the ball," Knight said. "He flashed, but was denied. I saw Kendall fall, and I took it upon myself to try to get off a last shot."

Barnes, a North Carolina recruit from Ames, Iowa, who was the McDonald's national player of the year, was the West MVP after an 18-point, five-rebound performance. He went 7 of 10 from the field.

"The McDonald's game is the biggest showcase in high school basketball, and this is one of the greatest moments of my life," Barnes said.

Knight, the Gatorade player of the year, had an off night with nine points on 3-of-11 shooting, but as he pointed out, "I'm a good shooter, and shooters never lose their confidence even when things are going bad."

Until his late-game heroics, Thomas also struggled with 11 points and seven rebounds on 5-of-14 shooting.

It was a typical all-star game with minimal defense and teamwork, very few fouls called and a whole lot of dunks.

Many of the West's baskets came on East turnovers and were completely unchallenged.

Generally, the West was larger and more dominant under the basket; the East more athletic and slicker on dribble penetration.

The East led 59-51 at halftime.

Applications are now being taken for the 14th Annual Big Apple Sports College Exposure Games. The 2010 edition will be held on Saturday, April 10, 2010 at City College, at 138th Street and Convent Avenue in New York. Registration will begin at 5:00 p.m.

This event is limited to 120 participants and is invitation-only, with no charge for the accepted participants. All participants must have college eligibility remaining - can be graduating high school seniors, high school graduates, GED recipients, or older students with college eligiblity.

The 2009 event was witnessed by some 100 coaches and scouts from schools and scouting services across the country, including Texas, California, Arizona, Oklahoma, Kansas, Iowa, Maryland and Florida.
